Where Is Your Hair Thinning?

Almost every mistake here comes from buying the wrong size. Too large is heavy and obvious. Too small leaves the edge of the thinning visible just beyond its border, which draws the eye straight to it.

So start with one question: how large is the area where you can see scalp?

A small, specific spot — at the parting, above a temple, or a scar. A hair patch or one of our smallest toppers: the Tiny Topper, Smallest Hair Topper or Mini Topper range. They cover the spot and nothing else, so they stay light and invisible.

Along the parting line, where scalp shows as a widening line rather than a patch. The Scalp Line Topper and Scalp Covering range are shaped for it — narrow, long, following the part.

The front hairline, thinning at the temples or moved back. The Dense Front Hairline Patch rebuilds the front edge; the Heart Shape Topper covers front and parting together.

The crown — the spiral area at the back you can't see yourself. The Seamless Crown Topper, Happy Crown Topper and Crown Perfect Hair Topper sit over it.

A wide area across the top, where parting, crown and front have joined up. You need a large base — the 6 by 6 Silk Base Hair Topper, Full Head Topper, or the Biggest Hair Topper with Hairline in 8x8 HD lace.

Most of your head. With too little hair to clip into, a topper has nothing to hold onto. That's where a wig is the honest answer — our Seamless Front Hairline Wigs and Silk Base Full Head Wig.

Thinner hair, no visible scalp. You don't need coverage, you need density underneath. That's a volumizer.

Topper, Patch or Wig

Three words used interchangeably online, and they aren't the same thing.

A hair topper clips into the hair you still have and covers the top of your head. Its base sits against your scalp with hair knotted into it, so what shows through your parting reads as skin and roots, not fabric. Right for most women with thinning.

A hair patch is smaller and targeted, concealing one defined area without adding coverage elsewhere — the right start if your thinning is localised.

A wig replaces everything and needs no hair underneath to attach to, which makes it the answer during chemotherapy, with advanced alopecia, or whenever a topper no longer has enough to grip.

Unsure between a large topper and a wig? Send a photo first — it's the most expensive decision to get wrong here.

Silk Base, Lace Base or HD Lace

The base sits against your scalp and decides how natural the parting looks and how it feels to wear. Most people don't know to ask about it.

Silk base gives the most realistic scalp. The knots sit hidden beneath the silk, so parting the hair reveals something that reads as skin rather than mesh — the most convincing option in bright light and in photographs. Our Essential, Volume and Scalp Covering toppers come on silk.

Lace base is lighter and more breathable, which matters through an Indian summer, and it's the more affordable way into a good topper — see the Essential Hair Topper (Luxury Lace Base) and Seamless Lace Hair Topper. HD lace is the finest mesh made, used where the hairline itself has to disappear, as on our 8x8 topper.

Short version: silk for the most natural parting, lace for comfort, HD lace where the hairline has to vanish.

Most of our toppers hold with pressure clips. If your hair is fine or slippery, a backcomb base grips better (Backcomb Hair Topper), and velcro sits flatter and comes on and off faster (Seamless Velcro Hair Topper).

If Your Hair Is Grey or White

Most of this market pretends grey hair doesn't exist. Toppers get sold in flat black and brown, which sit on salt-and-pepper hair like a solid block of colour against hair that has depth in it.

We make the range properly. The Grey Blend Volume Topper, Grey Blend Essential Topper and Grey Blend Backcomb Hair Topper mix grey through the strands at a natural ratio. For white or near-white hair, the Snow White Essential Topper and Snow White Backcomb Hair Topper match without yellowing.

If you've stopped colouring, or you're growing it out, this is your section. You shouldn't have to go back to dye just to make a topper match.

Will Anyone Be Able to Tell?

Three things decide it, and none of them is price.

The shade. A beautifully built topper in slightly the wrong tone is visible from across a room. A simpler one in the exact right shade is invisible from a foot away.

The texture. Straight hair on wavy hair separates and shows the join. If your hair has natural movement, choose a textured option — the Curly Volume Topper exists for that reason.

The size. Err slightly larger and clip into healthy hair at the edges.

All three are settled before you order, from one photo. Send us your hair in natural daylight — outdoors or beside a window, never under indoor bulbs — plus one of the thinning area with a hand mirror behind you. We'll tell you which base, size and shade to buy, and if what you need is a volumizer or a wig instead, we'll say so.

We'd rather talk you into the right one than sell you the expensive one.

Living With It

A topper is worn, not installed, and the first week is an adjustment.

Take it off at night, and move the clip placement slightly each day so the hair underneath isn't under constant tension. Wash it only when it needs it, with a mild sulphate-free shampoo in cool water — it has no scalp oil, so it needs washing far less often than your own hair. Keep conditioner off the base; air dry flat.

One thing most women skip: a light layered trim by your stylist, blending the topper's ends into your own hair. It does more for how natural it looks than almost anything else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Will a topper make my hair fall out faster?

Ans. Not when it's worn properly. The clips grip the healthy hair around the thinning area, not the fragile hair in it. Problems come from leaving it on overnight and clipping into the same spot for months. Move the placement, take it off at night, and your hair is no worse off than without it.

Q2. I don't know what size I need. How do I measure?

Ans. Part your hair as you normally do and look at the area where scalp shows, using a hand mirror if it's at the back. Measure roughly how wide and how long it is, then choose a base slightly larger so the edges clip into hair that's still dense. Or send a photo and we'll size it for you.

Q3. Will it move in wind, on a scooter, or while I'm cooking?

Ans. Clips and backcomb bases hold firmly once pressed into the hair. What loosens a topper is clipping it into freshly washed hair, which is slippery — second-day hair, or a light backcomb at the clip points, fixes it.

Q4. Can I oil my hair while wearing one?

Ans. Take it off first. Oil breaks down the base and makes clips slip. Oil your scalp as normal, wash it out, and put the topper back on once your hair is dry.

Q5. I'm losing hair from chemotherapy. What should I be looking at?

Ans. A wig rather than a topper, since a topper needs hair underneath to attach to. Our Seamless Front Hairline Wigs are built with a natural front edge so the hairline reads as your own. Message us and we'll talk it through without any pressure to buy.
